Our roots

Dar Medina is a Moroccan owned family operation built on a great love for the people and tribes of Morocco, and a passion for keeping the traditions of Morocco alive in the rapidly modernizing world.

Mostafa has been traveling Morocco as a nomadic trader for nearly two decades.  After working in carpet and leather shops as a teenager, he followed the nomadic tradition of his family and roamed the country, learning the ins and out of each local craft as he went.  He rode the long haul buses and caught rides where he could, hauling his wares and trading the regional goods as he went.  Over time, Mostafa has built a network of craftspeople and traders throughout the country.  It is these artisans, sustainably practicing their traditional craft, that we source from to this day.

When dealing with Dar Medina, you can be assured you are dealing with honest and dedicated people who have organically, over many years, developed an expertise and built a sustainable business focused on quality products and the celebration and preservation of our beloved cultural traditions.

Where Dar Medina Rugs are Sourced From

From more than 13 years of experience as a traveling merchant in Morocco, Mostafa has developed deep relationships with the local vendors from the most remote regions of the Atlas Mountains to Metropolitans like Chefchaouen, Fes, and Marrakesh. Some of the local vendors that Mostafa has developed close ties with heavily rely on his business for their income. Due to the decrease in tourism in Morocco since the outbreak of COVID-19, the business that he provides these families are a lifeline.

Your continued support of Dar Medina not only uplifts a local Minnesota business, it also has global effects, providing financial support and sustaining the families that handcraft the rugs, carpets, tapestry, leather goods, jewelry, and accessories found at Dar Medina.
